Ways you can support HGA
Like all not-for-profit organisations and charities, Hyperemesis Gravidarum Australia runs on funds donated by generous and kind people like you! Without people making direct donations, running fundraisers, or participating in promotional activities (like our Christmas Raffle) we wouldn’t have the money to do any of our work, or even function at all really.
So, what do HGA spend the money on?
That’s a great question, and we’re so glad you asked. Running a charity is like running any business - which means we have overheads. We try to keep these as low as possible so that most of the money in our kitty goes towards helping women suffering from pregnancy sickness.
Some of the things we spend our money on:
Website management and hosting
Purchasing and renewing permits to fundraise in each state
Insurance for our board members
Conference attendance fees
Marketing and promotional materials for conferences and meetings
A big cost for us at the moment is setting up our volunteer program. This involves a complex website, training and certification for volunteer management and additional insurance policies. It’s a long and slow process but we hope to launch the program this year.
That’s brilliant, how can I help?
Another great question, you’re on fire, my friend! There are a few ways you can be involved in funding the work of HGA. Let’s break it down:
Donate directly to HGA through our website here
Set-up a GoFundMe page - if there’s some activity you like doing why not get people to sponsor you. For example, are you mad about running? Why not compete in an event, or set yourself a challenge and ask people to sponsor you.
Instead of presents, ask for donations - everyone loves getting presents for their birthday or Christmas, but what about instead of that you ask people to make a donation on your behalf. Facebook makes this easy by letting you add a donate button to a status update (just search for HGA when prompted)
Host a morning tea at work or home - who doesn’t love tea and cakes? No one! So why not put together a delicious spread and ask people for a donation
Check out everydayhero - this is a bit like GoFundMe but in addition to taking donations, it has lists of all the types of things you can do for a fundraiser. For example, it lists all the triathlons in the country, suggests charity events (like The Colour Run) in your city and so much more
Love those ideas, but has anyone done any of them successfully?
So many great questions coming from you! We’ve had a few really excellent successes with donation campaigns. Let’s tell you all about them:
HGA Director, Kale, asked people for donations for her birthday last year. She’s not that popular (only 250 friends, ha!) but she still managed to raise a cheeky $435 for us!
Kale, ever the overachiever, also participated in The Colour Run in Sydney with her husband and three nippers. They had a pram and a whale of a time, all the while raising $1550
We’ve currently got three AMAZING women preparing to participate in triathlons, asking people to sponsor them by donating to their GoFundMe pages. So far these legends, Caitlin, Kaitlyn and Erin, have collectively raised a staggering $3720
We do a little happy dance every time we see someone donate or fundraise even a single dollar. We know that our future depends entirely on the generosity of strangers - and we are so grateful to you all. We really believe it is important that HGA exists - to help women and families struggling through pregnancy sickness and to help the health care industry better manage their care. We will keep you updated with all our fundraising updates and promise to always be transparent about how we put your money to use.
